Orthodontist Emergency Care
Orthodontic treatment is designed to be safe, comfortable, and predictable. However, occasional issues may arise during treatment. Most orthodontic emergencies fall into two categories: concerns related to appliances and direct injuries to the teeth or mouth.
Knowing how to respond can help keep your treatment on track while protecting your smile.
Appliance-Related Concerns
Braces and orthodontic appliances are durable, but everyday activities can sometimes cause minor issues such as a loose bracket or poking wire. If you experience discomfort or damage, please contact our West Bloomfield office at (248) 702-5232 during business hours so we can schedule a repair appointment.
To ensure every patient receives the highest level of care and attention, we may not always be able to accommodate walk-in visits.
Temporary At-Home Solutions
Until you’re able to visit our office, here are a few ways to manage common issues:
- Irritating or poking wire
Cover the area with orthodontic wax. You may also gently reposition the wire using a pencil eraser or cotton swab. - Loose bracket or band
If it remains attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax. If it comes off completely, store it safely and bring it to your next visit. - Loose wire
Carefully reposition the wire using clean tweezers. If needed, secure it temporarily with floss or cover sharp areas with wax.
Injuries to the Teeth or Mouth
If you experience a direct injury, such as a fall or sports-related accident, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and contact your general dentist as soon as possible. Your dentist can assess the injury, often with X-rays, and provide immediate care.
If a tooth is chipped, displaced, or knocked out, your dentist should be your first point of contact. Afterward, Dr. Angelique Thomas will evaluate and adjust any orthodontic appliances if needed.
Headgear Concerns
If you are wearing headgear, discomfort is often related to inconsistent use. Following instructions carefully will help ensure proper function and comfort over time.
If the facebow becomes bent or causes significant discomfort, please contact our office so we can assist you. Consistent, proper wear will help your treatment progress smoothly.
After-Hours Care
If an orthodontic emergency occurs outside of office hours and you are in pain, please call (248) 702-5232. Our voicemail system will provide instructions to help you receive timely assistance.
